Today we made a start on planting nearly 200 hazel whips.
Planted in groups of three to give a little more initial impact.

If only laying a hedge was this quick! The 2019 nest box survey kicked off today with Robin doing sterling work up the ladder. Mike's coloured wool experiment came up trumps showing that blue tits definitely prefer red wool over black for their nest lining.   An excellent turnout for the last Saturday work party before Christmas (Maybe we need to have mince pies and mulled punch more often?). Have a great Christmas everyone! See you on 5th January.  The first hedge laying session of the season got off to a good start, the team being fuelled with doughnuts kindly donated by our good friend Nigel.   Spotted these guys this morning. Nothing sinister, just a tasty snack for the resident wildlife.
It's early October and the red oaks in Joel Park are starting to put on a show.  Highlights - 64 different species, 197 moths counted (plus approx 600 water veneer). Most common species - Mottled Rustic, Uncertain, The Dun-bar. See full results in attached spreadsheet. 
Some photos from this morning, examining and recording the moths caught overnight in the trap which was set up in John & Pip's garden. Really interesting and good fun!
